Perhaps this is not the image nor subject that springs to mind when you think of Emin, but this delicately etched creature is in fact a self-portrait of Emin who is known for her much looser abstract female forms. Made almost twenty years ago there is something so beautiful about the precision of this wee etching, with the owl’s eyes set completely in the centre, directly engaging the viewer. Perhaps the owl is challenging us with this seemingly innocent depiction, for if you look closely you can still see her usual subject matter, nestled in the trunk.
